“Calming pheromones for pets: experiences as a visiting Vet at Boston”

Welcome to the good year of 2023

Dr.Worakan Boonhoh, our lecturer and researcher in the Center of Excellence in Innovation of Essential Oil and Bioactive Compounds. Here is her memory about research abroad on “Calming pheromones for pets: experiences as a visiting Vet at Boston”

“When I was a visiting veterinarian at the Foster Hospital for Small Animals, Tufts University, Boston, USA. I was impressed that they have used calming pheromones for cats and dogs in the inpatient ward and examination rooms. There was not a routine using the pet pheromones in Thailand.”

“Pheromones are natural chemicals released by animals that help communicate within the same species. They won’t impact other species or humans. These chemicals help keep pets calm and relax during visiting animal hospitals. There are various types of the pet pheromone product nowadays, ie. diffusers, sprays, collar etc.”

“Pheromone products simulate the properties of natural, positive pheromones. The products release the positive chemicals and can reduce stress and anxiety by comfort pets in the area. For cats, they can help decrease unwanted behaviors, such as urinating outside the litter box, scratching furniture, and over-grooming. They can also help to calm tensions in a multi-cat household. For dogs, the pheromones can help them to relieve their anxiety and stress during examination time and events like storms and fireworks.”
