Research experience abroad

Dr. Saifon Phothisuwan (Ph.D. in Food Science and Technology), Lecturer in Food Science and Technology Management, Faculty of Science and Technology, Rajamangala University of Technology Thanyaburi and Researcher at Center of Excellence for Innovation in Essential Oils and Bioactive Compounds, Walailak University

“I graduated a Ph.D. in Agro-Industry, Food Science and Technology from the Department of Food Industry. School of Agricultural Technology and Food Industry Walailak University during The education I received scholarships from Research and Researchers for Industry (RRI) Scholarships.

Beside my learning experience at Walailak University, I also had the opportunity to do research abroad at the Rutgers University, Department of Food Sciences, State University of New Jersey, a university located in New Jersey, USA, for 3.5 months under the supervision of Professor Dr. Kit L. Yam. Over there, I learned about applied research, such as film development to extend the shelf life of minimally processed fruit products. I was surrounded by master’s and doctoral students, postdoctoral researchers, and professors specializing in food packaging from different countries.”

” I learned about the systematic thought process to solve problems and plan research according to the needs of the food industry. The first process is to gradually find out the cause and problem deeply before embarking on a plan to design an experiment. Every week I had to discuss research together to present perspectives or ideas and progress at each stage of the study, my colleagues always offered good support and feedback for continuing to work on the next step. In addition factors that we must always take into account are the company’s ability to put the research findings into practice in the food industry, such as the availability of products, tools or equipment that the company has, the cost of its manufacturing processes, and the availability of technology to be used in the industry. Throughout the course of the research there, I had to present the progress, results of the experiments, and discussions to overcome the conclusions and appropriate implementation of the next study. What’s important is what I’ve learned from doing research abroad, they can be used to do systematic research that takes into account working with the food industry after graduation.”

“As a lecturer and researcher at Rajamangala University of Technology Thanyaburi. I have the ability to apply those knowledge and experiences to plan research to meet the needs of entrepreneurs and the problems of the food industry. I can also use conceptual processes to teach my students to have a systematic plan to do research as efficiently as possible.”

“I would like to thank the advisor, Prof. Dr. Narumol Matan who is a major contributor to giving me the opportunity to pursue higher education and accelerate me to get the beneficial experiences for my future.”
